10. Cleaning the hot plate of an iron
Every now and again you get the setting wrong on your iron and you get left with a sticky residue rear to come off on your best white shirt. Remove the residue by running the hot iron over paper sprinkled with salt.
11. Cleaning an oven without toxic smelling oven cleaner
Make a thick paste of 3/4 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup salt and 1/4 cup water. Wipe out the oven with a damp sponge and immediately spread on the paste. Leave overnight then remove with a spatula and wipe clean with a damp cloth. If your oven surface allows you can use steel wool on tough spots. (Note if your oven is really in a state you may need to resort to something harsher. This cleaner works best on when you don’t have too much baked on – if you know what we mean).
12. Natural Shoe Polish
Yes people do still care about polished shoes! Make a mixture of olive oil and a few drops of lemon juice. Rub on to leather shoes with a thick cotton rag. Leave to soak in for a minute or two then polish with a clean dry rag.
